Invernadero Comuntario Raices (Roots Community Greenhouse) is a non-profit project of The Next Door, Inc. We started in 2010, using a rented greenhouse and small outdoor garden space. Food security, nutrition and overall health improvement for low income families is a primary focus. Education is a big piece of what we do, including organic gardening methods, nutrition, small business skills development and collaboration with school groups for science learning. We’re funded with grants and veggie / seedling sales.
We are looking for a larger out door space so we can work with more families and expand our veggie sales potential. We’ve got funds to build an irrigation system and new garden beds and are applying for funds to build our own greenhouse and hoop house.
If you have arable land that is not being used (at least 1/2 acre), and are interested in community projects, we are keen to talk to you about potential collaboration that could involve: sharing land, knowledge, possibly a tiller or tractor in exchange for seedlings, irrigation system development, community involvement, learning about local Latino foods and traditions, etc.

In Trout Lake we produced 3044 #s of raw milk last month. It is Grade A WSDA inspected unpasteurized milk. Cows eat only organic alfalfa /grass hay and select organic minerals. Kefir starter is free and often available. We show you how to make it with our cream on the top Jersey milk. Have you tried our milk or Kefir yet?

Like big trees? Plant a seedling now for your grandchildren to enjoy!
The annual Underwood Conservation District plant sale is here, so hurry to get your seedlings! A variety of native species are available, including beautiful flowering shrubs that will attract beneficial insects to your garden, fire & drought resistant species, hardy conifers that provide shade year-round to your home or creek, and hardwoods that turn vibrant colors each fall.
These low-cost native seedlings are 1-3 years old and will thrive in Gorge conditions with minimal care after their first year. Paid orders will be available for pick-up in March of 2012, just in time for spring planting. Be sure to order early to ensure availability. Popular species sell out fast!
For a complete list of available trees and shrubs, or to get more information about UCD’s natural resource enhancement programs, please visit the website (http://w3.gorge.net/ucd/treesale.htm), call 509-493-1936, or stop by our office in the Park Center Building at 170 NW Lincoln St., in White Salmon.

Hi everyone. My wife and I are in the process of moving to Hood River. We currently are farming (not by ourselves) 40 acres of organic mixed veggies and 10 of apples/blueberries in Massachusetts. Looking to do more of the same in Hood River but on a much smaller scale. Does anyone have or know of any small acreage that we might be able to lease? Would love to get involved in the farming community and would be thrilled with any ideas, suggestions, or leads. Thanks so much!

We are moving to the Gorge in December and I will begin working for Gorge Grown in January 2012. We (me, my husband, & our 6 year old) are looking for a place to rent for the next 6 months or so while we attempt to find a small farm to purchase. We are open to many different situations, including a place just to park our RV & hook up electricity, a small cabin, or a house either in Hood River or within a 30 minute drive there. We would consider a full or partial rent trade in exchange for farm work too. We have over 30 years of combined experience in all aspects of farming & ranching. We are quiet, responsible, and hard-working. We are also open to find a lease-to-own or owner-financed farm situation of 20+ acres. Thanks!

Fresh From the Farm has redworms available. The Redworms will work all winter for you in your compost piles, bin, gardenplots and fields. Redworms will consume organic matter (manures, leaves, kitchen wastes, animal bedding, garden stems/vines, shredded paper and cardboard etc.) and leave behind worm castings that are higher in plant available nutrients than any other manure, compost or fertilizer. The worm castings also will improve soil structure and texture, moisture retention and draininage. Worm castings also naturally contain plant growth hormones! So get a head start on a very successful garden or farm crops with redworms. They will do the work for you. You CAN successfully grow organically. Redworms are available from our family-run Gorge-local farm at the low-cost end of the industry standard. 500 redworms for $12.50 and 1000 redworms for $25. We also have complete redworm compost kits available. To ask questions or to arrange to get your redworms, contact us at waconverse@yahoo.com.
